A look at some of the most horrible examples of horse equipment on the market today.
Please remember, this blog is simply MY opinions. Everyone has some and like armpits, some stink! It is all subjective anyway. I am not telling anyone what to use at all. I am just making observations and stating my own likes and dislikes. If you do not agree, fine, you are entitled. THERE IS NO ONE RIGHT WAY.
Please, read and enjoy and try not to be ugly to others. Everyone has a right to their opinions.

Bwahahahaha!
This is not necessarily tacky and is not harmful to the horse, it was just so hilarious looking I had to post it.
It is a shadow roll for a harness horse, they call it, predictably, a brush roll. Snork, snicker.
is it like they do for racehorses? Sometimes they'll put a really big sheepskin noseband on to stop the horse putting its head up in the air; if it does then the noseband will mean that it can't see, so it'll stick it's head back down again to see where it's going. Maybe it's a version of that? A really odd looking version anyways....
That, or it's a way of getting your horse to clean the water trough as it drinks? lol
As the horses on the track are racing, some have been known to spook, and even try to jump a shadow that might be across the track. So this is just another version of the big fuzzy shadow rolls you will see on the nosebands of some. Also, some feel it makes the horses lower their heads some, to look down, over the shaddow roll.
I had never seen one of these. I picture those little LED light things where the ends show the light, and usually color. Like those tacky lamos of the 80's. That would be awesome for night racing, eh? (snicker)
My aunts one standardbred had one that had little finger things that flapped in the wind when he paced. He had to have it so he would be distracted by them or else he would explode and do stupid dangerous things. He won them a lot of money but they quickly put him in a claiming race before he got someone seriously hurt.
As somebody already said, it's a device to stop a racing horse from jumping a shadow on a dirt track. (It's less of a problem on turf where the shadows tend to be less distinct). I have seen a horse lose a BIG race because it jumped a shadow...it makes them slow down and lose momentum. Most shadow rolls look like very heavy sheepskin nosebands...this one's a bit different, but it's basically for the same purpose.
Wha??! What is the purpose of it?
ReplyDeleteBeats me, really. Perhaps someone can enlighten us.

Seems like a very convenient way to clean your buckets with very little effort.
ReplyDeletehehehe, I found this while searching for harness stuff, and was like WTF!? hehehe, I can see the use, but still, WTF?!
ReplyDeleteHeehee, chimney sweep horse!!
ReplyDeleteBefore I read the text I thought it was to help with weaning.... ow.
ReplyDeleteBack at the barn, Dolly dons her pink brush roll to match her tutu for the big night at the ballet...
ReplyDeleteI think it's like horsey high fashion... not worn everyday, but something we occasionally aspire to. ;-)
